Building blocks of a world class iron oxide-copper-gold province

We now have an incredible wealth of geoscientific data and knowledge about the metallogenic province that contains the Olympic Dam deposit and the Gawler Craton that hosts it. This talk will review new datasets that provide an unprecedented view of this world class province. Recent geophysical studies at the lithospheric scale have revealed the fundamental plumbing systems that localised fluid flow into the crust. The explosion of geochronology across the Gawler Craton has also led to a new understanding of the incredible dynamism of the region during the mineralisation event around 1.6 billion years ago. Further, recent systematic mapping of mineralogy and geochemistry has begun to document the effects of fluid flow that ultimately led to formation of ore deposits across the region. Finally, if we have time, we will also do a little crystal ball gazing to take a look at current and future research underway here in South Australia that will shape the way we think about and explore for major mineral deposits over the coming decades. Come along for the ride.
