Students: What to expect as a geologist – examples and thoughts

Timed to align with the end of the university year as some students start to consider their next steps, two talks delivered from different ends of the career spectrum will give insight into the roles, challenges, skills required and lessons learnt in minerals exploration.

1. The Sunday Creek Gold Project, Victoria, enjoys a global focus as an exceptional exploration project with enormous potential. Originally presented at Round-up, this talk gives insight into what makes a good exploration project – process, people, prospectivity and passion.

2. There is a lot to be learnt from other peoples experience. Raiding memories (and pics) from decades in geosciences, this talk attempts to make sense of what it is to be an exploration geologist and how to get in.

Speakers

Claudia Bowman

Claudia Bowman is a geologist with 5 years’ experience. Graduating from Monash, her career includes the spectacular Fosterville Gold Mine and now the equally spectacular Sunday Creek Gold Project (Southern Cross Gold). She’s received the Bruce Hobbs award at university and backed it up with the Young Women in Mining Award (2022).

Bill Reid

Bill Reid is a seasoned exploration geologist. He’s worked on projects from generative through mining, field though corporate, on three continents for companies large and small.  He currently chairs the Victorian AIG and is happy to pass on his thoughts on what worked and didn’t work over 30 years in industry.
