CoRE (Centre of Resources Excellence) ‘It’s #therealclassroom 14 year learning Journey’ – It all started with $400.00…..

SUZY URBANIAK, CoRE Lead – CoRE Learning Foundation, CoRE Educator – Geologist

#therealclassroom is the motto for the CoRE Learning Model (CLM), it is evolutionary and transformational and its alumni attest to its benefits, ‘twelve years after being in the inaugural CoRE 2007 class, I am in the San Jaun Province, Argentina. The benefit of #therealclassroom is life changing. It has shaped my entire career and in turn my life, as a Geologist’.

From humble beginnings in 2005, spearheaded by the integration of an informal STEM program (The Petroleum Clubs – Schools Information Program) into the CoRE Leads (Suzy Urbaniak’s) Year 10 science curriculum, a fourteen year journey for the CoRE Learning Model (CLM) has seen it become the foci of the CoRE Learning Foundations’ Expansion Program. The CLM, in 2019 has been implemented at Tom Price Senior and Kalgoorlie Boulder Community High Schools. At its Lighthouse School – Kent Street Senior High School, a committed and dedicated team led by its new CoRE Coordinator, ensures that the CoRE program continues to flourish and evolve.

Suzy is a passionate leader who’s infectious enthusiasm for progressive education motivates all of those that work with her. Her willingness to drive change and the dynamic foundations that CoRE has been built upon, creates a real environment of inclusivity amongst the team of CoRE facilitators. Both, CoRE Educators and their students are encouraged to diversify and adapt to the delivery of a unique STEM skill based curriculum. They are given ownership of their contemporary courses whilst receiving meaningful and applicable mentoring to be the best educators and young scientists and engineers in their learning environment. In #therealclassroom, learning is ‘doing,’ it is collaborative and teams problem solve real world situations. CoRE is STEM Learning, life long learning and its alumni, which includes geologists, geophysicists, mining engineers, metallurgists, environmental scientists, pit technicians, FIFO camp managers, mechanical engineers and more are successful individuals across the whole of resources industry value chain in Western Australia. CoRE will continue to provide homegrown skill talent to serve the resources industry beyond 2025 through the collaborative not for profit – the CoRE Learning Foundation.
