In partnership with Edith Cowan University, this WA Mining Club 2019 Education Series panel discussion will explore balancing the needs of cultural heritage and indigenous business opportunities in the WA Mining industry

Our speakers will discuss the importance of generating jobs and business opportunities and explore the next steps that the mining industry should take in order to engage the next generation of Indigenous people.

Allan James

Chief Executive Officer, Carey Group
Allan is  CEO of the Carey Group, the largest 100% Indigenous owned and operated business in Australia. The Carey Group is a mining, civil construction and training company with offices in Perth, Adelaide, Darwin, Brisbane and Kalgoorlie.

In addition to employment and business procurement opportunities, Carey maintains a strong social & philanthropic approach and through the Carey Education Trust and their Caring Communities foundation, they support Aboriginal Australians with their educational needs and provide the necessary support structures within the community.

Allan is passionate about changing the dialogue for Aboriginal Australians and believe that culture, education and employment are key to leaving a positive legacy and Closing the Gap.

Katina Law

Director, IPS Management Consultants

Ian Wells

Chief Financial Officer, Fortescue Metals Group
Ian  Wells joined Fortescue in 2010 and has held multiple senior executive roles in the Finance team, including funding, treasury, planning and analysis as well as Company Secretary. He commenced as Chief Financial Officer in February 2018.

Prior experience includes financing Fortescue’s US$10 billion major iron ore project development to 155 million tonnes per annum, and successfully undertaking multi-billion dollar capital raising and refinancing transactions in domestic and international capital markets.

Ian holds a Bachelor of Business in Accounting, is a Fellow of CPA Australia, a Certified Finance and Treasury Professional and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Kyra Bonney-Galante

General Manager Indigenous Strategy, Chandler Macleod
Kyra Bonney is a Guburn (Kupurn) woman from the Goldfields region of Western Australia. She is also connected to Noongar country.

She has worked extensively across Western Australia for a range of mining companies and has spent 13 years as an operator in the resource sector working for BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Leightons, Downer EDI, Thiess, Carey Mining and Ngarda.

She has 19 year’s experience in the industry, 13 years as an operator and 6 years as a consultant.

Currently working for Chandler Macleod as General Manager Indigenous Strategy she is responsible for recruiting and managing Indigenous projects for their clients this consists of managing an Indigenous team with that of their managers to ensure consistent and effective employment outcomes aligned with the Chandler Macleod Indigenous Strategy.

Kyra currently manages projects under the Indigenous Procurement Policy on behalf of clients to ensure that they are meeting employment and procurement outcomes to enhance social economic benefits for the Indigenous communities.
