Course Leader

Grant Boxer, a consultant geologist with over 40 years’ experience in exploration and mining, has presented numerous QGIS workshops in western and eastern Australia.

The Economic Geology Research Centre (EGRU) at James Cook University in Townsville is offering 2 x oneday workshops in QGIS early in 2020. QGIS is a free open-source program that runs on PC, Mac and Linux systems. The EGRU QGIS workshops are designed for intermediate and experienced users of GIS. While the workshops are offered for geoscientists, they are also open to other professionals who use GIS and want to find out about QGIS and what it can do for them.

This workshop will comprise

  • An introduction to the various features of QGIS
  • Extensive hands-on sessions using QGIS to create maps and to demonstrate the import and
display of various types of data (vector, raster, geological, geochemical, geophysical, and
    satellite imagery).
  • Examples of using free on-line data via web servers, and using plug-ins to select, download and process satellite imagery
