The Australian continent is well endowed with a vast array of different mineral commodities whose discovery and development are critical to the national economy. The continent is made up of a number of cratonic centres and intervening mobile belts, both of which are overlain by a series of basins many of which host world-class mineral systems. The focus of this UNCOVER workshop is to better understand the sedimentary basin-hosted Cu-Pb-Zn-U mineralisation system considered to have great potential in Australia.

The aim of this by invitation-only workshop is to:

  • Bring together a community of explorers, government agencies and researchers focused on basin-hosted mineral systems.
  • Explore differences and limitations of basin-hosted mineral system conceptualisation and their relationship to petroleum systems.
  • Discuss current exploration strategies and synergies across the community.
  • Seek feedback on pre-competitive datasets and knowledge generation underway by Geoscience Australia (GA) and state/territory partners as part of the federal government’s Exploring for the Future (EFTF) program.
  • Influence pre-competitive datasets and knowledge gathering to attract exploration into greenfield areas.

Although the workshop will focus on the application of mineral systems to the basins located between Tennant Creek, Mt Isa and the northern coastline, a number of generic understandings will emerge that that can be applied to basins elsewhere.

A similarly structured UNCOVER workshop focused on geophysical techniques of cover-thickness estimation two and a half years ago shaped GA’s and the state/NT survey’s work programme. Your input into this workshop is highly valued and we hope the workshop as a whole will have a similar influence on shaping the minerals component of the new Exploring for the Future programme.
