1-half Days Geophysical inversion workshop to estimate cover-thickness

Geoscience Australia & AIG WA Branch presents…

1-half Days Geophysical inversion workshop to estimate cover-thickness

Dates

30 November – 1 December 2017

Venue

University Club, University of Western Australia
Hackett Drive, Crawley WA

Following the recommendations from the UNCOVER post-summit technical workshop on cover-thickness in 2014, Geoscience Australia (GA) and its collaborative partners have carried out extensive benchmarking of various geophysical techniques and inversion methods for estimating cover-thickness over drill sites.

As part of the Exploring for the Future program the aim of this workshop is to provide an overview and hands-on experience in applying robust inversion tools to estimate cover-thickness using airborne-electromagnetic, magnetotelluric (MT) and passive seismic datasets. Each technique will be the focus of a 1 hour lecture and 2 hour practical exercises. Participants will be provided with an instruction manual, open source codes (many of which have been developed at GA and implement trans-dimensional inversion) and worked examples in packaged datasets. Our intention is that examples worked through during the workshop can be used by the participants as a basis to invert their own datasets. It will be helpful if participants could bring along their own laptops with administrative rights but, if this is not possible, sufficient laptops will be provided to enable working in pairs. Due to the large practical component of this course it will be suitable for entry level and experienced geophysicists and geologists who seek exposure to the latest inversion techniques for estimating cover-thickness to depths of less than 1km.
