Heidi Pass, Elemental Insight Consulting

Dr. Pass has taken on the challenge of becoming a leader, pioneer and empowering role model in STEM. A PhD-qualified geologist-geochemist, she is one of two women to achieve the role of Chief Geochemist at a major mining company globally, and the first Canadian undergraduate to sail with the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) as a Temporary Marine Lab Specialist. In 2020 Heidi established a successful boutique consultancy, Elemental Insight, leveraging 20+ years as an applied geochemist in industry, academic and consulting roles. She uses the periodic table and her knowledge of rocks, minerals and ore deposit formation to help mineral exploration- , mining- and technology companies turn data into exploration, mining and geometallurigcal knowledge and solutions. Dr. Pass began her career in Canada as an Environmental Geoscientist, evaluating and remediating remote abandoned mine sites, airports and nautical ports. She has since gained extensive experience in Australia and internationally across the mining value chain. Her PhD was conducted as a global collaborative research project investigating alkalic porphyry and epithermal copper-gold deposits.

With her innate talent for strategic innovation and collaboration, Heidi pioneered, and was the National Chair of a mentoring program for the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) that was successful in a national roll out. Throughout her career she has also been a member, mentor and speaker for committees and associations including Chamber of Minerals and Energy – WA: Diversity and Inclusion Reference Group, UWA Center for Exploration Technology-External Advisory Group, Society of Economic Geologists, Australin Institute of Geoscientists (AIG), and Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM). Recently she was the inaugural lead for the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Subcommittee of Women in Technology WA [+] (WiTWA). Here she co-founded WiTWA’s DEI Corporate Membership Program supporting organisations to address the under-representation of women in the technology sector, particularly in leadership roles. Currently, Heidi is a director of the AIG, and a mentor with Women in Mining WA (WIMWA).
