Abstract

There has been considerable development in the study of earthquakes over the past few years, although there is still much to learn, especially whether they can be predicted.

A summary of recent large earthquakes in Nepal, New Zealand and Chile will be given, followed by seismological developments in Australia and particularly in Victoria. Some recent work in engineering seismology and mining will be described.

About the presenter

Gary Gibson studied at the University of Melbourne, working there for several years in Geophysics. He joined the Phillip Institute of Technology, later RMIT University. In 1976 established the Seismology Research Centre, working on the application of earthquake seismology to engineering and geological problems.

After Gary left RMIT, the SRC was privatised, and is now part of Environmental Systems and Services. He works at ESS part-time, mainly in earthquake hazard consulting, as related to dams, mining, petroleum, geothermal, and earthquake code development. He has undertaken over 300 earthquake hazard studies in Australia, Asia, the Pacific, Middle East, Africa and South America.

He also now works part time at the University of Melbourne as Seismology Principal Research Fellow, where he is establishing a research seismology network within Victoria.

He is the president of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth (IASPEI) Asian Seismological Commission, and chairman of the IASPEI Commision on Seismic Hazard and Risk.
