Presentation Outline

Naturally occurring groundwater within the historical mine workings beneath central Bendigo has been recovering to natural levels since gold mining ceased in 2011.  The groundwater has elevated levels of salt, arsenic, heavy metals and hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg) gas.  If allowed to recover the groundwater would inundate the Central Deborah Gold Mine tourist attraction and discharge into local waterways creating environmental and amenity impacts.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has been working with community, stakeholders and local agencies, including the City of Greater Bendigo and Coliban Water to identify immediate, interim and long-term solutions for managing the rising groundwater in Bendigo’s historic mines.  An interim solution using conventional treatment methods is in place for the next 3 years while investigations continue into an appropriate long term solution.

Natalie will provide an overview of the project, its drivers and the groundwater system beneath Bendigo.
