About the Presenter & Talk

With a degree in GIS, Jason has over 16 years working in the GIS industry and currently works as the Senior GIS coordinator for SRK Consulting. His expertise is in GIS project management, digital mapping and cartography.  With also a background in GPS systems, he is also involved  in developing best practices in GPS field mapping. He currently manages all GIS data within SRK, developing server based solutions to publish and share spatial data across the organisation and externally to clients.

Field observations are still regularly collected using handheld GPS devices with notebooks, pen and paper; or for the more advanced users, dedicated ruggedized field GPS devices are becoming the norm. However, these devices remain expensive and are quickly overtaken by new technologies.

With the emergence of smart devices, geoscientists can make use of comparatively cheaper but capable devices which we already own (smartphones & tablets) for everyday field data collection, with the added bonus of being connected to a server for real time data collection.

This presentation will showcase the new technologies which the SRK Geology team have been using for field observations, with a live demonstration on how field observations are synced back to a server so data can be shared with teams and clients, both in the field  and back in the office in real time.
