DEVELOPING MINE WATER SUPPLIES FROM SAPPROLITE REGOLITH

This talk describes examples of development of mine and process water supplies from saprolitic rocks proximal to the mine site and often within the mineralised structure. This method saves costs and often considerable time than developing a water supply from a distal source such as from a palaeochannel. A saprolite source is also often of improved chemical quality to hypersaline palaeochannel water.

Knowledge of saprolite water sources is of value in conceptual and prefeasibility stages for potential mine development planning.

Kevin has been practicing hydrogeology for more than fifty five years, firstly employed in the oil exploration industry, eight years with the hydrogeological section of the Geological Survey of Western Australia and then as a consulting geologist since 1969. Some of his achievements include demonstrating initial storage and recharge capacity of the Gnangara Mound and the Jandakot Mound, now 50 percent of Perth’s water supply and the initial demonstration of the palaeochannel systems of Western Australia.

He has been responsible for initial discovery of a large number of a large number of mine and town water supplies in Australia and many parts of the world. His particular expertise is in greenfield arid zone water discoveries and in locations of unknown prior water sources. He has a strong belief that geological expertise is the key to success in discovery and development of groundwater sources.
