Seismic data from eastern Australian basins are dominated by coal reflectors. Coals are flat lying and go on forever what could be easier?
There is a lot of complexity in coal seams that coal geologists have known about forever, and that petroleum geologists are now coming to grips with. At the coal mine level, geologists are interested in the seams themselves, whereas conventional petroleum geologists are more interested in what’s happening between the coals.
This presentation will focus on the kind of information that is available from high-resolution 3D seismic for underground coal mining and compare it with the same geology at depths of over 2000m. The physics of coal reflectivity will be examined but no equations will be used.
Mr Henk van Paridon is a geophysicist with over 30 years of experience and has been working as an independent consultant for the last 20 years. He studied at the University of Adelaide and the Queensland University of Technology.
He is the principal geophysicist at Energeo Pty Ltd, a geophysical consultancy providing advice to the coal, CSG and petroleum industries. He is an expert in land seismic acquisition and interpretation with broad experience across a number of basins. He has consulted widely; from companies looking at continuous gas plays at 3000m in the southern Bowen Basin to advising on seismic methods for open cut mining.
In addition to his consulting business, Henk also provides training and mentoring services. Nearly 300 students have attended his seismic workshops over the last 6 years.
He is a former president of the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists and former editor of its bimonthly magazine, Preview.
