SA Broken Hill – Field Workshop March 2020

The South Australian Branch of the AIG presents:

Broken Hill Field Workshop

Barney Stevens and Graham Teale

Date

Monday 23rd March – Friday 27th March 2020

Workshop Presenters

Brian (Barney) Stevens led the Geological Survey of NSW geological and metallogenic mapping of the Broken Hill district. Worked on Broken Hill and the Curnamona Craton since 1970. Involved in research into origins of the metamorphic rock types, geochronology, whole rock geochemistry, ore genesis, aeromagnetic and seismic interpretation and the structure and sedimentology of the metamorphic sequence. As a consultant/contract geologist, Barney has worked on prospect evaluation, including detailed mapping, exploration geochemistry and drilling.

Graham Teale has over 45 years experience as a mineral exploration, mining and research geologist. He is currently carrying out research with Prof. Paul Spry of Iowa State University on the world class Broken Hill Deposit. He has worked on metamorphosed base metal mineralisation throughout Australia and in Africa, North America, India and Scandinavia. He has presented workshops on primary litho-geochemistry, low sulphur zinc mineralisation and IOCG mineralisation.

The Broken Hill Field Workshop will investigate the stratigraphy, alteration and mineralisation associated with the Willyama Supergroup the host of the giant Broken Hill orebody.

Distinctive “lode horizons” will be visited and discussed with regard to their
geochemistry, petrology and petrogenesis. These will include blue quartz-gahnite, garnetite,
quartz-garnet-apatite, BIF, and quartz-sillimanite rock. Core samples from all lodes/lenses will
be available to view at your leisure.

  • Investigation of the Mine Sequence in the Broken Hill area surrounding the Line of Lode.
  • Visit to the Southern Leases of Perilya and view surface outcrop of the various Broken Hill lodes. View up-dip examples of the Broken Hill lodes at White Leeds – Rising Sun Areas, Southern Leases. Possible visit to the Rasp Mine to view drill-core and surface outcrops.
  • “Distal” mine sequence areas with a visit to the Allendale mine area, and a Mt Gipps traverse from lower Broken Hill Group (Ettlewood Calc Silicate) through Broken Hill and Sundown Groups into lower Paragon Group.
  • The Pinnacles-Little Broken Hill areas including small mines on BHT mineralisation and a field traverse in the Northern Leases Area.
  • The Southern Cross Mine (Broken Hill type) area, the Stirling Vale area (Thackaringa Group albite rocks and their associated cobalt enrichment will be discussed).

On three evenings there will be PowerPoint presentations of various aspects of the general Curnamona mineralisation as well as more specific presentations on geology, mineralisation and alteration
