Meeting Point

Car parking just beside Landscape Rd, Tallarook VIC. People should meet at a car park which is located along Ennis Rd end then down (north) along Landscape Rd and park together at a corner without a name but plenty of space. 4wd owners can come up Landscape Rd – it is slightly shorter distance.

Coordinates are N: -37.11814 E: 145.12642 (view on google maps)

This is an especially clear example of the contact between a late discordant cordierite-bearing granite and surrounding Siluro-Devonian metasedimentary rocks (now hornfels). The Wilbel traverse is just under 2km and descends 260 m heading north following the boundary between granite and hornfels which is easy to locate. There are intervals of the walk where the contact is very steep and other places where it is near-horizontal; there are near-horizontal sections that are the top of the granite and other intervals that are the bottom making a particularly interesting geometry for a two hour walk. If you know any other batholith in SE Australia with all these features please let us know!

The walk is 2km and descends 260m over that distance. Walk is anticipated to take approximately 3-4 hours (or less) to finish walking and finish car and person shuffling. Children over 10 years welcome.

The Tallarook Guidebook is 60 pages of Tallarook plateau geology so much more detail and gives the larger picture and many more locations. Anyone who want a map could try the Rooftop Tallarook plateau map available in the Tallarook Store. Tallarook Geology guides will be available for purchase on the day ($15).
