Abstract

The Australian National Virtual Core Library (NVCL), funded in the frame of Auscope’s NCRIS-funded infrastructure programs, the CSIRO and the Australian State and Territory Geological Surveys, provides access to the world’s largest publicly available drill core database, with over 1.2 million meters of core available online through the AuScope Portal. This database provides the research and exploration communities with easy access to high-resolution core photos and drill core hyperspectral mineralogy from across the continent. This presentation will provide an introduction to the NVCL, and showcase the value of the NVCL datasets for understanding the upper 1-2 km of the continental crust. Using case studies, we will highlight applications of the NVCL datasets for probing the mineralogy of the entire continent, understanding mineral systems, as well some of the fundamental research being undertaken by the NVCL community to improve hyperspectral mineralogy outputs.

Speakers

Monica LeGras, Carsten Laukamp and Jess Stromberg

Short speaker bios:

Monica is a member of the Mineral Footprints team at CSIRO Mineral Resources where she leads The Spectral Geologist (TSG) project and Activity 2 of the NVCL. Monica has been heavily involved in hyperspectral mineralogy research at CSIRO for the last 8 years and is an expert in mineralogy and mineral characterization.

Carsten is a Senior Research Scientist at CSIRO Mineral Resources where he is a Group Leader within the Discovery Program and project leader of the National Virtual Core Library (NVCL). Carsten explores the potential for combined use of lab, field and remote visible and infrared reflectance spectroscopy, geochemistry and geophysics for characterising mineral systems.

Jessica is a Research Scientist in the Mineral Footprints team at CSIRO Mineral Resources where she leads Activity 5 of the NVCL and works on projects across multiple commodities applying the combined use of lab and field-based spectroscopic and geochemical techniques to address industry-specific challenges.
