Structural controls of fluid flow, mineralisation and alteration in the Barberton Gold Mines, South Africa.30th Geology of Gold – distinguished visitor lecture.The Barberton greenstone belt hosts several high-grade gold mines that have been continuously mined for ~150 years. These globally significant deposits, formed over 3.0 billion years ago, are hosted in ultramafic rocks, shale-greywacke sequences, banded iron formation and sandstone successions. Alexander KistersAlexander Kisters is a structural geologist and, until mid 2023, Head of the Department of Earth Sciences at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. He is the recipient of the 2021 Draper Medal of the Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA), the highest award of the GSSA, for his contributions to southern African geology. His work integrates regional tectonic studies with deposit-scale structures, particularly those of greenstone and slate belt gold deposits in the Archean Barberton belt. He is the distinguished international visitor for the 30th Melbourne Geology of GOLD course in March 2024. Cost and RegistrationFree event (registration is essential – see below).
