Talk

Geochronology for Mineral Exploration

The ability to add a temporal dimension is one of the tenets of mineral exploration, and Earth sciences in general. For ore deposits, this can often be complex as most minerals are not amenable to dating. Here, I’ll present a range of case studies that encapsulate uncover stratigraphy, characterise fluid flow and date mineralization. All these case studies have aided the explorers in better understanding their mineral systems in order to reduce exploration risk.

Speaker

Dr Hugo Olierook – Research Fellow, Timescales of Mineral Systems Group School of Earth and Planetary Sciences & John de Laeter Centre TIGeR, Curtin University

Hugo Olierook is currently a Research Fellow at Curtin University, both part of the Timescales of Mineral Systems Group and the John de Laeter Centre. His primary focus is designing, executing and managing geochronology and geochemistry projects for the mining and mineral exploration industry. Through a variety of PhD, postdoctoral, industry and government experience, he has gained a broad expertise in tectonics, mineral systems, geochronology, isotope geochemistry and basin analysis. Hugo enjoys spending time with his family, playing and watching sports, board games and – naturally – making epic advancements in science.
