Case studies and a range of risk management strategies will be presented. This workshop is designed for geologists, engineers, metallurgists, and management staff at all levels.

Overview

This workshop will identify and assess the sources of geological uncertainty that feed into ore reserve estimates, with implications from pit to port. Case studies and a range of risk management strategies will be presented.

Workshop outline

The workshop is presented in six modules:

  • Introduction and setting the scene (mining industry performance, examples of public reporting, mine profitability)
  • Underlying foundations (important terms, definitions, implications)
  • Mining risk and the importance of geology (conventional risk profile, geological inputs, consequences)
  • Sources of geological uncertainty (decision making, geological inputs to reserves, sources of geological risk)
  • Case studies from pit to port (mineral resource estimates, ore reserve estimates including mining, processing, waste disposal, transport)
  • Risk assessment and management strategies (unplanned events, conventional risk assessment, other risk assessment methods)

Group interaction and exercises are used to illustrate and reinforce workshop concepts.

Prerequisites

Workshop content assumes participants have a varied technical, administrative, or management background. No specific geological knowledge is required.
