Free and Open Source Software (FLOSS) has a mixed reputation. It has been critisized for being unstable, clunky, underpowered, undecipherable and having a learning curve or technical requirement that make it … less appealing. When it works well, however, Free and Open Source products can be exceptional, easily comparable to their commercial equivalents.
No matter what your opinion, it’s hard not to admire the price point.
Despite a counterintuitive business model, Free and Open Source software has persisted for 20 years – and has thrived in some application areas. But how has it impacted on geosciences? Where does it fall flat or punch above its weight? How deeply into the exploration process does Free and Open Source software penetrate?
Bill Reid is a geologist. He is not an Open Source nutter or zealot. His interest in Open Source software began in the last downturn, looking for training tools for local geologists to build or maintain skills while times were hard. ‘Collecting’ software that can replace or duplicate commercial packages proved slow and frustrating. This is the first time he’s tried to consolidate what he found and learnt, presented from a geology perspective.
It’s free entry. All welcome. Cash bar and meals available.
