The unexpected spin-off from petroleum exploration in the Burke River Structural Belt of the Early Palaeozoic Southern Georgina Basin, Western Queensland, provides a rational explanation for the phenomenon of the Min Min light. The Min Min of indigenous legend has been reported from numerous sightings just to the East of Boulia. Geological information indicates that the Min Min light is most likely not a myth, but a result of shale gas from Cambrian strata migrating up faults from depth. The relevant fault traces are generally marked by lines of springs at the surface.
After 10 years in academia in Australia and the US, Rod Gould joined Santos Ltd in Adelaide in 1980 and opened the first Queensland office for Santos Ltd in Brisbane in 1981. From 1986 he spent almost five years managing coal initiatives for the Queensland Government. He is currently managing the petroleum exploration of tenements held by Hedges Gas Pty Ltd in the Southern Georgina Basin of Western Queensland. Rod is a Fellow of the AusIMM.
Rod’s co-author, David Warner, has over 40 years’ experience in all aspects of petroleum exploration and was team leader for Santos Ltd unconventional reservoir group for 9 years. He currently is the principal of consulting firm DSWPET Pty Ltd. Dave is a member of both AAPG and SPE.
