David Whittle
Principal at Whittle-DG Pty Ltd & PhD candidate at Melbourne University
Tuesday 9th July, 2019
Nibblies from 6.30pm Presentation 6.50pm (approx.)
Basement on View
50 View St, Bendigo VIC 3550
This presentation will cover the main topic of David’s PhD research: Optimisation of underground mine plans. He will introduce the idea of decomposing (breaking up a large problem into sub-problems) the underground mine planning problem, review common decompositions and outline available solutions for the sub-problems. David will also describe a new decomposition and solutions to the two most difficult sub-problems in this new decomposition. David will conclude his presentation with a review of the technology readiness levels of his PhD research outputs: Some outputs can be applied immediately by planning teams to increase the value of their projects. Other outputs require further development.
David Whittle has been contributing to the field of strategic mine planning since the early 1990s, with Whittle Programming, Gemcom (now Dassault – Geovia) and BHP. David recently completed four years of research into underground mine plan optimisation at the University of Melbourne. His topics included the optimisation of the transition from open pit to underground mining, the decomposition of the underground mine planning problem and finding solutions to the most difficult mathematical sub-problems in such decompositions.
