NExUS-PD: An Introduction to the Exploration and Mining Industry (for Non-Geologists)

  • NExUS-Professional Development (NExUS-PD) workshops are pleased to be able to offer an online introduction to the exploration and mining industry, presented by Dr. Richard Lilly.
  • The 1-Day course will provide an overview of the minerals industry, the exploration process (including geochemical and geophysical techniques), drilling and sampling, the mining processes, and an overview of the main types of ore deposits.
  • The course has been specifically designed to be accessible and engaging to attendees with a wide range of backgrounds. No previous geological, engineering or technical knowledge is required.

Dr. Richard Lilly

Dr. Richard Lilly has 25 years exploration geoscience experience spanning the industry-academia boundary. After completing his PhD at Cardiff University (UK) he worked for Mount Isa Mines exploration exploring for copper, gold and base metals in far north Queensland (2007-2015).

In 2015 he transitioned to a role as an Embedded Research Fellow at the University of Adelaide where he has coordinated and supervised >70 applied research investigations on a diverse range of ore deposits. He co-founded the National Exploration Undercover School (NExUS) program in 2016 and was named South Australian STEMM educator of the year in 2022.
