The QGIS Workshop will be run by Tom Carmichael and Brenton Crawford of Solve Geosolutions.
Tom Carmichael is a mathematical geologist with a background using open source solutions to solve geological problems. With a strong technical focus and data driven approach Tom uses QGIS on a daily basis to assist with any number of geological problems
Brenton is a geoscientist. With a background in structural geology and geophysics, Brenton has particular interest in the integration of diverse geoscience datasets using machine learning techniques.
QGIS is a cross platform, open source GIS package which has recently become a viable alternative to traditional GIS packages. This is incredibly fortunate for the mining and minerals industry due to the sustained downturn and typically costly and inflexible nature of closed-source GIS options.
At the conclusion of this course, the attendees will be able to:
8.45 – 9.00 | Introduction & Setup |
9.00 – 10.30 | Familiarisation with QGIS interface, data import and export, differences and similarities between QGIS and MapInfo & Arc |
10.30 – 10.45 | Morning tea break |
10.45 – 12.30 | QGIS specifically for geology/exploration, using search expressions to get the most from your data, an introduction to the use and utility of the QGIS plugins, for example plug-ins for importing MapInfo workspaces, Landsat importing/analysis/classification and many more |
12.30 – 1.00 | Lunch break* |
1.00 – 2.30 | Geospatial Analysis and the processing toolbox – Extending QGIS |
2.30 – 2.45 | Afternoon tea break |
2.45 – 4.30 | Using the Map Composer (and post editing in InkScape), distributing data, QField and Case Studies |
4.30 – 5.00 | Question time |
Participants in this course are assumed to have a working knowledge and experience of the everyday uses of GIS.
Participants with limited knowledge of QGis will be able to get assistance on the day from one of our course presenters, however, it is strongly advised to have undertaken/attempted the QGis online introductory tutorials (Modules 1-5) which can be found at https://docs.qgis.org/2.14/en/docs/training_manual/index.html.
All participants are advised to have downloaded QGis version 2.14 or later and spent some time familiarizing themselves with the software prior to attending the course.
The current QGIS build is 2.16.2 although any version after 2.14 will be fine for the workshop.
QGIS version 2.14.0 will be loaded on the computer lab’s system. If you wish to use a newer version of QGIS you will need to bring your own laptop.
A sample set of data will be provided for the workshop, but participants are welcome to bring their own data.
*Tea and coffee facilities are available at the venue. Please note lunch is not included. Participants may either bring their own lunch or purchase food at a nearby cafe in Buninyong (4 km, 5 minutes drive).
Places are limited (maximum 30 people) for this workshop so register your place to avoid disappointment.
