SMEDG April 2024: Industrial Minerals

Sydney Mineral Exploration Discussion Group (SMEDG) presents:

A necessary part of your life – Sydney construction materials from the Illawarra and Southern Highlands

The presentation will consider the Sydney aggregates supply industry and its importance to all of us in our daily lives. We will look at supply coming from the regions to the south of Sydney; location of operations, various uses, and impact of transport distance exceeding 200 km for some producers.

The talk will cover the following aspects of this vital industry:

Review Coarse Aggregates produced from rock, including:
• The operators and material types/products, and specifications.
• Consider the geology of Illawarra and Southern Highland regions and the impact on products and quality (grade).
• Look at case studies of resource investigations.

Review Fine Aggregates produced from sand and crushed rock, including:
• The operators and material types/products, both natural and manufactured.
Consider the importance of transport, and the ability to locate replacement resources and some of the difficulties encountered.

Speaker

Graham Lee BSc UNSW

Graham has worked as a geologist. He initially spent 8 years with ACI Technical Centre Pty Ltd working on glass raw materials having been offered a position in early 1969 by Peter Stitt. This was followed by many years consulting with Peter Stitt and Associates Pty Ltd, before setting up his own consultancy practice. In all, Graham has more than 50 years of experience in the geological, technical assessment, and evaluation of various industrial minerals and construction materials. Much of that work has focussed on determination of resources and reserves for various client projects.

His experience includes construction aggregates (both hard rock and unconsolidated deposits), cement making materials, mineral sands, and glass and ceramic raw materials. As an independent consultant, Graham has provided advice to clients with construction material operations including Cement Australia Pty Ltd, Holcim (Australia) Pty Ltd, Cleary Bros (Bombo) Pty Ltd, and Australian Resource Development Group Pty Ltd.

Graham is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and a Member of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (MAIG).
